2013 – a review of the past and plan for the new

GOAL!

No not the footboal goal – though when I acheive a goal, one of these dances might come in handy.

Oh yea! Dance like you own it!

Oh yea! Dance like you own it!

But a few of the blogs I follow have talked goals. My friend Linda at Gymnotes kept it “Short and Sweet”

And fellow gym goer over at I Train Therefore I eat, a year in Review

So in preparing my 2013 goals – I used the year in review and looked back at, what exactly WERE my goals last year.

Lose weight [ DUH! ]

You don't scare me!

You don’t scare me!

Well I started out 2012 at 138 lbs and ended at 131.  So yea I’d say I accomplished a goal.  But more than that? I have learned something much more important than the art of stepping on a scale.  My mind and thought process over the whole concept of eat, exercise, and what exactly makes me happy? Has grown, evolved and molded into a healthy view of me.

How so?  Well, if I missed a workout I didn’t beat myself with a whip and feel like an epic failure.  I got to the gym the next day.  If I groaned and felt like that run didn’t feel like what I wanted to do?  I went to a yoga class or lifted weights, I LISTENED to my body and did what felt right.  But I did it without the historical one week breaks from the gym because – well -

“I didn’t work out on Tuesday so how could I possibly have a good workout WEEK if I didn’t workout according to SCHEDULE!?”  Don’t we do that to ourselves? If we can’t stick to it and be regimented then its an EPIC FAIL.  Whatever, no it is not…  You get back on the treadmill and just drive on.  And with that I finally feel like I got a good workout going on ALL year long.

Feeding myself became more controlled.  Oh, yea wait, I deployed to an environment with 3 meals a day and no alcohol so some of that was imposed on my environment.  But really  even before I was making healthier choices, cleaner meals, and paying attention to what foods I put in my face.  It’s really simple – eat in moderation and eat less processed crapola.

Try try again, just don't give up!

Try try again, just don’t give up!

Happiness.  Ah – yoga. So I deployed to Afghanistan and got introduced to an amazing Yoga instructor.  I love the words of wisdom he has about living in the moment, bringing intention to what you do.  It makes sense, I started to really think about things around me.  I am what I am – that is that… it’s lovely.

I'm almost there...

I’m almost there…

SO GOALS!  2013 is upon us, I have 6.5 months in the Stan left.  WHAT will I do with that? How do I make 2013 a good year despite living on a compound and being away from my friends and family?

1.  Continue to take pride in my fit self.  Yup – simple, just keep it up!  Variety is the spice of life and I love the variety I have learned to enjoy in the gym.

- Cardio: Run, Cycle, Elliptical
- Body Weight: Rings, Pull Ups
- Yoga: Ommmmmmmmmmm just be

2.  PULL UPS! My Goal is to do 10.  UNASSISTED.  I’ve got 2.8 down its time to get serious… ladies the way to get good at pull ups?? Shhhhhhh it’s a secret but I’ll share ready? DO PULL UPS!  It’s really the only way, if you can only do 1 at a time, do 1 at a time.  Get an assistance band and knock them out.

Love this back... acheivable!

Love this back… achievable!

3.  Bench Press: 110 lbs.  I feel I can do it, hubsters is cheering me on.  Gonna go for it.

4.  Complete the USMC [United States Marine Corps] the Air Force, and the Navy Physical Fitness test, along with taking my Army PT. The plan is in May.  Funny its only the USMC I’m worried about – lol.

SoxBox

5.  Weight.  Okay so I lost 7 lbs last year.  I’d like 6 more, BUT, if I can reach my physical goals and I feel good and fit my pants?  I’m good with half that.  ;) I’m still going for 6, I think I’ve still got a bit to much middle jiggle.

So relaxed, so happy - comfortable in my skin

6. I’ve applied to transfer to the Signal Corps, getting back to my Geek roots.  IF I’m accepted, my goal is to prepare myself for going back to FA 53 training in Fort Gordon.  Not really sure how to quantify this.  Wish me luck!

7.  Family and friends, continue to tell them how much I love them.  Never miss a chance to just say it – because.  Get better about picking up the phone.  I rely a lot on email, sometimes the voice is just better.

8.  LOVE my husband, embrace the joy of our relationship.  Each day realize how wonderful it is to have someone you truly love that is your BEST friend in your life.  To find someone who loves you for you, in all your gladness, sadness, mental and emotional breakdowns, neediness, and successes.  My goal is to not lose site of that and to not take it for granted, ever.

9. PHOTOGRAPHY!  I know you didn’t think I would forget that.  My goal is to finish the Nick Carver photography class online that I started.  I have one class done.  It’s time to get a bit more serious and put some of my downtime aside to read a chapter and to get out with the camera and expand my knowledge.  I had so much fun with underwater photos in Thailand.  And landscape photos were fun, but I want them to be more composed, better balanced, so I’m going to finish this class.

I’m going to leave it an odd number of goals for an odd numbered year.  I don’t know if I’m stretching myself much – my job is consistently pushing my brain, so having goals like these that help focus the inner me to be focused on de-stressing and joy?  I think that’s a good balance for my year.

What do you feel you did well last year?  Anything you want to keep going? Make better? Start?

HAPPY 2013!  Someone out there toast a glass of champagne for me!

  1. Great blog! Nice to hear that you are meeting, exceeding and still working on goals. I love your outlook on life. I am glad that you are pursuing work that you enjoy. Your photos are the best, retirement career…I am about to put many of them up in my home, just framed a ton of photos. I’m so proud of you! xoxo

    • Thank you sis, having each other all these years to watch grow into what we are today? Precious. I love you and I’m always so thankful for the guidance you give, the shoulder I can cry on, and the boot in my ass when I’ve whined long enough! Glad you like the photos! Can’t wait to visit again and see all your hard work on the furnishing renovations. Love you

  2. Love your goals Jenny :) You can do it with the pullups!! I’m still working on mine too — I’m trying to get to 10 chin ups and 5 pull-ups, we’ll get there! Also, great notes about telling your family you love them and also appreciating your marriage… It’s easy to take things for granted but so important not to. Something I’m sure you know all too well in your line of work! Happy New Year :)

  3. I love your goals, I love that they are centered on fitness, emotional happiness, & making the most of your God given talents/skills and good sense. But most of all that they recognize that you life is enriched with your deep and abiding love of friendships, family, oh yes and the man who loves you just as you are and supports you at every turn. As someone approaching 34 years of marriage I know that’s key. 2013 will be a great year for you both. Lots of Love, Mom

  4. Good luck – Ft Gordon is one of our old stomping grounds. DH enjoyed his time attached to the signal corp and with joint services.
